15.4 - More feminine nouns (2)

On page 15.3 the principal types of non-first declension feminine nouns were presented. This page brings together the remainder, which are often considered to be exceptions, so, once you have taken note of the paradigms given below, there are really not many more forms to learn!

The only other nouns of this type are compounds of матір: прамати, Богомати.

The archaic form of the nominative, accusative and vocative singular, матір, is still sometimes used in poetic or solemn registers.

All other nouns ending in -ір are masculine.

These are the only two nouns of this type. They follow the pattern for first declension in the singular, but change their stem in the plural.

N.B. In contemporary Ukrainian the plurals людини and дитини are sometimes used, particularly with numerals, as in «Дві дитини (людини) потрапили у лікарню», to stress persons and chidren as individuals, as opposed to offspring and members of the human race, respectively.

Двері
is used in the plural only, so it is not obvious that the noun is feminine.

Other feminine nouns used only in plural include труднощі, солодощі, тонкощі and a small number of other, mainly abstract, nouns with an -ощі ending. These are declined like first declension mixed nouns in the plural.

N.B. Вівця (sheep) has the form овець in the genitive plural (accusative plural is вівці or овець).
