5.5 - Declensions

The way noun endings change depends not only on their number and gender, but also on the declension (grammatical group) each noun belongs to.

Knowing the declension of a noun will help you to identify its gender and number, understand its function in the sentence (i.e. its case) and to analyse, and therefore understand, sentences.

Trying to grasp how nouns are organised into declensions is not always easy, as different Ukrainian reference books and grammars organise the declensions in different ways. To help you understand the general picture, an overview of the declension system in Ukrainian is presented in Unit 6.
