7.5 - The dative case

Principal uses of the dative

As the indirect object of a verb, normally used with verbs of giving, showing, telling, explaining (something) to someone; for example:

Хочеш нажити ворога – позич другові гроші.	If you want to gain an enemy, then lend (to) your friend some money.
Треба сказати виборцям правду.	You should tell (to) the voters the truth.

With a wide range of impersonal verbs and expressions (in these cases the subject in an English sentence is put into the dative, i.e. indirect object, in Ukrainian); for example:

Андрієві холодно.	Andriy is cold. (It is cold to Andriy.)
Це Олі здається.	Olia thinks that. (It appears to Olia.)
Моїм батькам буде приємно з Вами познайомитися.	My parents will be pleased to meet you. (It will be pleasing to my parents to meet you.)
Глядачам сподобався цей фільм.	The audience liked the film. (The film was pleasing to the audience.)
Cьогодні студентці не працюється.	Today the student can't get down to work. (Today work isn't going well for the student.)

With expressions of permission, possibility, necessity; for example:

Громадянам України потрібно оформити візу.	Ukrainian citizens need to get a visa. (Getting a visa is necessary to citizens of Ukraine.)
Дитині не можна гратися надворі.	The child may not play outside. (It is not permitted to the child to play outside.)

Giving people's age, for example:

Скільки їм років? Орисі 20 років, а Максимові – 18.

How old are they? (How many years are there to them?) Orysia is 20 and Maksym is 18.

With the prepositions: завдяки (thanks to), всупереч (contrary to), наперекір (in spite of).

Form of the dative

Singular

Masculine singular nouns normally end in -ові /-еві /-єві but also have the alternative ending -у /-ю. In personal names composed of more than one element, e.g. name and surname, the second element usually takes the short ending (with the aim of simplifying the whole).

Передзвоніть, будь ласка, Іванові Шевченку.

Please ring (to) Ivan Shevchenko.

Feminine noun endings in -ка,-га, -ха will change to -ці, -зі, -сі under the influence of the і ending.

Plural

Plural endings are straightforward (see the charts in Unit 6).

	Стрільцям даруйте будь-що для активного життя: від риболовної вудки до квитків у екзотичний тур.
	В подарунку Козерогу найголовніше – дотриматися стилю. Краще презентуйте щось якісне і практичне. Тобто гарну ручку, дорогий записник, зручний гаманець тощо.
	Водолієві сподобається модна новинка з будь-якої «галузі». Головне, щоб вона була най-най...
	Для Риб підшукайте щось незвичайне: абстрактний живопис чи вишуканий портсигар.
